Since it was founded in 1927, KEO has grown into the largest and most prestigious beverage supplier on the island of Cyprus with a thriving export trade to much of Europe, the US, Canada and the Middle East.
KEO’s rise to the eminent position of a total beverage company is owed both to the high quality of KEO brands produced locally and the renowned imported products enriching its portfolio.
KEO is a public limited company formed in 1927 with its shares quoted and trading in the Cyprus Stock Exchange. It is a member of the Hellenic Mining Group whose varied interests in mining, cement production, consumer goods and banking make it the largest industrial group in Cyprus.
KEO’s growth and its rise to the eminent position of the leading Wine making and Brewing industry on the island, cannot but be attributed to the high quality of all KEO products; strong household names on the island for decades. KEO markets a wide variety of wines, spirits and liqueurs as well as KEO Beer and St. Nicholas mineral water, locally and in over thirty countries worldwide.
The KEO Brewery was the first to be built in Cyprus. Production of KEO Beer -a Pilsner type Lager Beer- started early in 1951. The original brewery had a small production capacity of about 300,000 gallons annually. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand, the company has carried out substantial extensions to the plant and the equipment now used being the most up-to-date machinery in the brewing industry. The brewery is currently capable of producing over 30,000 hectoliters of beer monthly.
The KEO winery in Limassol is a modern establishment with a storing capacity of about 45 million litres. In addition, KEO operates three more wineries situated in the Krasochoria region of the Troodos mountain range. Mallia and Pera Pedi wineries are amongst the first to be built on the island. These wineries are close to vineyards where research is carried out in an effort to increase and safeguard the varieties of grapes, selecting those that will yield the best quality of wine when grown under the local climate.
The LAONA boutique winery, established in 1986 near Arsos village, has been taken on the family of KEO wineries in 1993. Situated in the heart of the Troodos vineyards at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres the winery uses noble grape varieties, producing a range of wines carrying exclusively the name of this vinegrowing region, famous for cultivating Cyprus indigenous grape varieties.
Experimenting with new varieties and cultivation methods has proved essential to winemaking. A great deal of resources and funds have been invested in MALLIA, into the rediscovering of Cyprus indigenous grape varieties, many of which date back to the classical times, a period when the Cyprus wines reflected the island’s heritage and were so much praised.
The continuous development and progress achieved by KEO is the result of a long term and steady growth strategy carefully planned to meet the demands of a constantly changing environment. Set near the village of Kakopetria, in the heart of Troodos Mountains, the Saint Nicholas Mineral Water plant has been designed and built to the highest European standards. The remarkable purity of the St. Nicholas water is owed both to the location of the source far from residential or polluted areas and to the bottling procedure of the water in environmentally friendly P.E.T. bottles produced on site prior to filling.
Two more organisations come under the KEO umbrella. SWS and Sun Island are among the island’s leading fruit juice producers. Their range of products and activities extends from fruit juices to canned fruit and vegetable. Similar with KEO wineries, the two companies cultivate their own citrus plantations in addition to absorbing a great amount of fruit produced Cyprus-wide.
In September 2000, KEO has acquired Uniliquor Distributors, an agent company, importing and distributing in Cyprus, worldwide famous brands of Wines and Spirits.
Aiming at becoming a total beverage supplier, KEO plc has recently expanded its range in the beer sector by adding Heineken, Amstel, Murphy’s and Erdinger in the company’s portfolio. Moreover, its non alcoholic section has been empowered by PRIGAT, a range of ready-to-drink and catering fruit drinks line.
